How to tactically ensure your fleets' optimum efficiency

Increased pressure on industry to both reduce costs and evaluate performance has resulted in greater focus on improving vessels' technical and operational efficiency. Rising bunker fuel costs and environmental concerns have elevated this drive towards efficient fleet optimisation even further.

This Forum will provide a tactical approach to vessel performance – with practical discussion, and a holistic approach to ship operations. We will look at the future of integrated whole ship operations, and consider the impact of ship efficiency on ship shore operations.

There is an ever-growing list of actors with a stake in a vessel’s performance management. Cargo owners, charter companies, banks, investors and insurance companies all require transparency and evidence of commitment to efficiency measures in their contract requirements.

Through two defined plenary sessions, interactive roundtable discussion groups, and informative question and answer panel sessions, we will focus on practical methods, and will bring together representatives to discuss the barriers in the industry that are hindering operational excellence.

Mr Hansen has worked with Maritime applications and communication for almost two decades and has extensive international experience from working and living in several maritime hubs including Dubai, Oslo, London, Brussels, Singapore and Houston. He is currently head of Sales North Europe for Maritime in Marlink.

Holding a Master Degree in Business Management from Copenhagen Business School, Jenny N. Braat was employed at Danish Maritime in 1990 focusing on market research, statistics and state aid and further managed to build up a network of political contacts and other persons of significance for the industry to raise political issues. From 1995 to 1999 Jenny N. Braat was heading the Brussels office of Danish Maritime. This office serves to maintain the interests of Danish Maritime in relation to the European Parliament, the European Commission and other international organisations. As chief economist from 2000-2011 Jenny N. Braat headed up several working groups within the circle of members of Danish Maritime covering the fields of after-sales service, market research and development, trade negotiations among others. The primary focus of these groups was to safeguard the political interests of the Danish maritime industry, and many of the working groups are still existing and more have been added. In 2007 Jenny N. Braat was appointed deputy director of Danish Maritime, and from 2011 she has been heading the organization as managing director. From the beginning of the career at Danish Maritime it has been a set goal to unite the Danish maritime industry by developing the organization from primarily focusing on shipyards to encompass the entire land-based maritime industry and especially raising its profile politically. This on-going process has resulted in a significant increase of members of Danish Maritime and a much clearer valuation among Danish decision-makers as to the value of the Danish maritime industry. Among other notable positions Jenny N. Braat is Chairman of the SEA Europe Working Group on Market & Forecast, vice chairman of the Danish Maritime Fund and in the board of SEA Europe. Furthermore is she in the advisory board member of several universities and maritime clusters.

Jakob Buus Petersen is Director and Co-founder of Vessel Performance Solutions. The company specialises in software products and consultancy services within Performance Management for the shipping industry.

Petersen began his maritime career as a naval architect with Force Technology, rising to the position of Chief Specialist. Next assignment was as Chief Specialist and Head of the Vessel Performance Department within Maersk Maritime Technology for the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group in Copenhagen. He successfully led the implementation and management of the Vessel Performance Management Service focused on optimizing the operational performance of a large fleet. Later Petersen joined American Bureau of Shipping as Director of Energy Efficiency. He was responsible for the development and implementation of the classification society's initiatives and programs within performance management and visited numerous shipping companies around the world to discuss Performance Management. Petersen brings more than 25 years of technical and operational experience to Vessel Performance Solutions and has gained international recognition for his work on ship performance. Petersen's professional experience encompasses fuel efficiency, fuel indexing, EEDI, EEOI, ship performance and maneuvering. He also headed the optimization of the hull lines and propellers for Maersk's Triple E next generation container ships. Petersen holds an MSc in Naval Architecture and a PhD for "Nonlinear Strip Theories for Ship Response in Waves" from the Technical University of Denmark. He has been involved in many industry committees and joint industry projects, including the ITTC Maneuvering Committee which he chaired for three years.

Jesper S. Jensen is Senior Vice President and Head of Technical Division of Torm A/S since 2014. Mr. Jensen has 20+ years of shipping experience. Previously he worked with Clipper Group as the Senior Vice President and at A.P. Moller-Maersk as Fleet Group Manager.

His current responsibilities include the safety and HR of the crew onboard approx. 75 product tanker vessels, ensuring that all sailing asset’s are in compliance with rules and regulations, that energy efficiency of the fleet is best in class and all assets are commercially available at any time. Jesper has a strong focus on the owner’s bottom line without compromising safety and the environment. He also has supervision of new buildings and takes them into operation.

Ando Hideyuki is senior general manager of MTI, R&D company of NYK Line in Tokyo, Japan.

After he joined MTI in 2005, he leads many R&D projects regarding ship energy efficiency and safety operations. His team has contributed to development of NYK’s IoT platform SIMS (Ship Information Management System) and utilization of IoT and Big data for ship operations in NYK.

Dr Hideyuki was honored with Best Youth Award JASNAOE (Japan Society of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering) in 2003. Prior to his current job, he was associate professor of the University of Tokyo. He holds a Doctor of Engineering.

Jeppe Skovbakke Juhl is educated as naval architect and holds a position as Manager in the department for Maritime Technology and Regulation, where he is responsible for co-ordinating BIMCO's initiative on a large variety of technical related matters. His core competencies cover maritime flag State administration (flag State implementation, Goal- and functional-based regulation, Risk-based approval process), Risk assessment (Formal Safety Assessment methodology), Ship stability (intact and damage) as well as in-depth technical knowledge on Air Emissions and Green House Gases. Jeppe Skovbakke Juhl has previously been working as researcher at FORCE Technology (Danish Maritime Institute) for 8 years and at the Danish Maritime Authority for another 8 years.

Mogens graduated in 1974 as Msc(econ) from the University of Copenhagen and joined the Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs. He has held various positions in the Ministry spanning from export credits over administrative tasks to industrial policy. 

Mogens joined the Danish Maritime Authority in 1996 and has worked with development of framework conditions for the Danish Maritime Cluster – The Blue Denmark. 

Central tasks on industrial policy, research and innovation have been:

With a background as a mechanical engineer, Karsten Borneman has worked at MAN Diesel & Turbo (MDT) for 22 years in project engineering as well as sales, having had the responsibility or world-wide sales of complete propulsion solutions offered out of the MDT prodcuction facilities in Frederikshavn, Denmark - ousing both low-speed two-stroke engines and medium speed engines as main propulsors.

Today the Propeller and Aft Ship Solutions is a separate business area within MDT – where Karsten Borneman is heading a newly formed propeller license department, which is responsible for strengthening the local availability of the MDT propeller poretfolio in the main shipbuilding nations.

Lauritzen fleet consist of Bulkers and LPG carriers covering everything from short term TC-in vessels to fully owned, managed and operated vessels with sophisticated auto log systems. Mr. Vange holds a MSc from the Technical University of Denmark, specialised in Hydrodynamics. Before joining J. Lauritzen in 2012, Mr. Vange was Project Manager at FORCE Technology involved in development and delivery of ship simulators.

Ben van Scherpenzeel, born in Maarssen in the center of Holland, joined the Nautical Academy in Terschelling, one of Holland’s northern islands. After his graduation in 1990, he started as a 3rd officer with Shell Tankers and Seatrade. In 1993 he joined Holland America Line and worked for 12 years as a deck officer, staff captain and project manager of new build programs.

He joined the Port of Rotterdam in 2004. His present responsibilities are the development of nautical information applications, new planning and reporting schemes for vessels, mooring systems and maritime spatial planning of the North Sea.

Next to his assignment at the Port of Rotterdam, Ben is also project leader for the International Harbour Masters’ Association and the European Harbour Masters’ Committee.

Together with EHMC secretary Ingrid Römers he developed the Nautical Port Information Project and videos such as “The Chain” and “The Missing Link”.

During his vacation he loves to explore the Dutch waters in Holland on smaller boats and to dock at a waterside restaurant to enjoy a good meal, with a good glass of wine, nice music and fun company.

Van Ballegooijen has graduated from 2 Technical University studies on Mechanical Engineering and Process & Product Design. After graduation he worked for 18 years at Wärtsilä Propulsion where he started as a ship propeller designer (hydrodynamicist). Since 2001 he headed for Wärtsilä various operational engineering and project management departments. From 2009 onwards he shifted towards R&D and headed various Research and Development departments all related to ship propulsion product development and design. Since 2015 Van Ballegooijen is heading the VAF Instruments R&D team, responsible for sensor applications, application development, and for providing customer consultancy on hydrodynamic data analysis. One of the main development projects he is responsible for relates to the application of propeller efficiency measurement instruments and the IVY ship propulsion performance measurement solution, which was in 2016 awarded the FATHOM Ship Efficiency Award.

Martin joined Hapag-Lloyd and the Fleet Support Center team in December 2013. His work includes the development of measures to increase awareness and efficiency of the operated fleet. Furthermore Martin designs key performance indicators to evaluation the impact of these measures and to evaluate the fuel performance.

Before Hapag-Lloyd Martin worked at Germanischer Lloyd's Research & Development unit for about 7 years. His previous experiences include operational energy efficiency, ship design optimisation, development of consultancy services and advisory of the German flag in questions of energy efficiency in international bodies.

Martin graduated as a mechanical engineer with emphasis on naval architecture.

Søren Hansen is currently Assistant Director, Vessel Performance, and is head of Vessel Performance Services for the Advisory Services department in ABS.

He has previously worked as a Vessel Performance Specialist with A.P. Moller-Maersk, Propulsion Dynamics and Principia North, and was for a period Associate Professor at Svendborg International Maritime Academy (SIMAC) where his focus was on Nautical Operations and Safety. His operational experience has been gained from a long career as a Master Mariner with various Shipping Companies in Denmark.

Hansen has a PhD degree in Naval Architecture from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and he also holds a MSc degree in Marine Technology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Lilach Goren Huber is a research associate at the Institute for Data Analysis and Process Design of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland.

She received her MSc and PhD in physics from the Weizmann Institute in Israel in 2011. She then gained industrial experience in data analysis and algorithm development for Pentalum, a start-up specializing in remote wind measurements.

At 2013 she joined the Zurich University of Applied Sciences. Her research focus is condition-based and predictive maintenance of technical equipment using data analysis methods, mathematical modelling and optimization tools. Goren has led R&D projects in various application fields in collaboration with partners from industry and the public sector. Some examples are: electricity and water supply networks, hydro-electric power plants, safety equipment in road tunnels, airport fleet and laser cutting machines. A recent project together with MESPAS AG has aimed at developing a software solution for condition based maintenance of hull and propeller for marine vessels.

Søren Hattel is Team Leader of the onboard software systems team in FORCE Technologys maritime division. He is responsible for innovation and development of the software suite “SeaSuite®” which offers several products covering vessel performance monitoring, weather routing, trim optimisation and engine monitoring.

The team participates in several innovation projects and authors of a new standard for exchange of vessel performance data under the BlueINNOShip partnership and is participating in the EfficienSea2 project under EU Horizon 2020.

Søren Hattel holds a Ph. D. in superconductivity from Technical University of Denmark. Before joining FORCE Technology in 2011, Søren Hattel amongst others worked in the Danish Space Research Institute and in the Danish Parliament.

The seagoing career started in 1971 and included several trips to Greenland and to the Antarctic. Gained a Master’s certificate in 1979 and served as deck officer in the East Asiatic Company until 1983 on containerships and con-bulkers. 

Studied naval architecture from 1983 to 1987. Worked in the Basic Design Department of Burmeister & Wain Shipyard from 1987 to 1996 and became Head of Department in 1994. During that time a large number of tankers, OBOs and bulk carriers were designed and built at the yard. 

From 1996 and onwards employed by BIMCO as technical consultant and from 2002 as Head of the Marine Department. Spent some 10 weeks annually in IMO during these years and participated in three expert groups, the last in 2007 on amendments to MARPOL Annex VI on air pollution. 

From 1 March 2010 Director of Regulatory Affairs in Maersk Maritime Technology, A.P.Moller-Maersk. Chairing the Technical Committee of the Danish Shipowners’ Association. 

Niels Bjørn resigned from A.P.Moller-Maersk 1 December 2016 and is now working as independent consultant.

Thomas Weber holds a deck officer license, a PhD in optimum routing and voyage planning as well as a degree in business management. He worked several years with ‘Oceanroutes’ before he joined StormGeo, formerly Applied Weather Technology in 2005. Thomas contributed to the growth of StormGeo Shipping in Europe and to the development of products and services such as BVS and FleetDSS. Thomas now leads the development team for StormGeo on Vessel Performance tools.

Kristian holds an Engineering Degree from the Technical University of Denmark, and he is also has a PhD degree in Hydrodynamics. He has worked in Vessel Performance Analysis and Development within the Maritime Sector since 2006, first as a Specialist and then as the Head of Hydrodynamics at Maersk Maritime Technology. He has been driving the development of Performance Analysis within Maersk for the Shipping related businesses, and he has also participated in Newbuilding of Large Container Vessels, such as the Triple E project. Ship Planning and Design for Optimal Efficiency

A vessel should be designed optimally for the operations that it will encounter during its lifetime. A significant change in the industry has happened over the last five to seven years and focus on efficient designs has increased significantly.  

Experts in ship operations and ship design will present how design methods have improved, both in setting new requirements to efficient tonnage but also in the methods in which ships can be designed today.


Session 2:
Fleet Performance Management

Companies are slowly learning how to manage new types of anti-fouling coatings, quality of dry-dockings, how and when to conduct hull cleanings, and propeller polishing. Hull and propeller degradation after and during a dry-docking period is a major contributor to underperformance of ships, but other factors also leave for improvement; engine efficiency, ship’s own power production and power consumption, use of boilers, shaft generators, consumption in harbours – these all have an impact on the efficiency of the typical merchant fleet.
